Grand Duke Károly Sándor was the ruler of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach from 1853 until his death in 1901. He was the third ruler of the Grand Duchy and had a significant impact on the cultural and political development of the region. During his reign, the Grand Duchy flourished and supported many artistic and scientific initiatives. Károly Sándor was born in Weimar on June 24, 1818, and died in Weimar on January 5, 1901. During his reign, the Grand Duchy served as an economic and cultural center, and the monarch himself took an active part in promoting the arts and sciences. The Grand Duke's interest in the arts contributed to Weimar becoming one of the centers of German classicism.

Grand Duke Károly Sándor was the ruler of the Grand Duchy of Szasz-Weimar-Eisenach from 1853 to 1901. One of the circulation coins issued in the Grand Duchy was the 1 Pfennig, which was made of copper. These coins were minted in Berlin in 1858 and 1865 and their mintmark was 'A'. SACHSEN WE" was written, while the reverse side read "SCHEIDE MÜNZE 1 PFENNIG YEAR NUMBER". The coins weighed 1.5 g, had a diameter of 17.5 mm and a thickness of 0.9 mm. Their rims are smooth. These coins served not only as means of payment, but also as historical documents, with the help of which we can gain insight into the economic and cultural conditions of the time.
