Rama X, also known as Bhumibol Adulyadej (1927-2016), was the ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty of Thailand, who ruled Thailand from 1946 to 2016. He was the world's longest-serving head of state and the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history.Bhumibol Adulyadej was born on December 5, 1927 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. His father was Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, his mother was Princess Sangwan Talapat. He ascended the throne in 1946, following the sudden death of his nephew Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII). He was crowned in Bangkok in 1950. Bhumibol Adulyadej was famous for his support of Thai culture and arts. In 2016, he launched several projects for rural development and the modernization of agriculture. He died on October 13 in Bangkok at the age of 89. After his death, his son Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) succeeded him on the throne.

The coins usually featured the king's portrait, coat of arms, name, and regnal year on one side, and Thai national symbols such as the garuda, Thai lion, Thai elephant, Thai lotus flower, or Thai temples on the other side.
