Geza II

Geza II

Reign
Hungary (1141 – 1162)
Description

Géza II reigned in Hungary between 1141 and 1162. He was the oldest son of Béla teh Blind and Queen Ilona. Compared to the fact that he was only 32 years old when he died, most people classify him as one of the most powerful Hungarian kings, as his foreign policy extended to many places.

Géza supported the church with extraordinary strength. In 1142, he founded the first Cistercian monastery in Cikádor (located in Tolna County, now known as Bátaszék). Also, his campaigns were largely successful. During his reign, the Kingdom of Hungary came into intensive contact with Egypt and Hvárezmer.

He died in 1162. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Stephen, and then by his second son, Béla.

Minting information

Géza's II coins are among the smallest circulated coins in the world. In the 12th century - primarily due to economic reasons - the diameter of money decreased.
