Minting information

During the reign of Magnentius (350-353), the coinage of the Roman Empire was chaotic and varied. Different coinage styles and currencies prevailed in the eastern and western halves of the empire. Western Empire: Gold: Minted solidus and tremissis, weight and fineness varied. Silver: Minted miliarens, rarer than gold coins. Bronze: Minted folles and nummi, lower value, for everyday use. Eastern Empire: Gold: Minting of solids, Constantius II. in common with the emperor. Silver: Mintage of Siliqua, 1/24th of the solidus. Bronze: Mintage of Folles and Nummi, of lower value, for everyday use. The coins often bear the portrait of Magnentius, the legends VICTORIA AVG or SALVS REIPVBLICA. The minting places were marked with letters ( eg A = Siscia, P = Roma). The quality of the coins varies, the late coins are of lower quality. Magnentius' coinage is an important source for the history of the period. Based on the minting places and the quality of the coins, conclusions can be drawn about the economic situation of the empire and the military situation of the emperor.
