Description

Peter I, the first ruler of the Kingdom of Serbo-Croatian-Slovenian, was born on June 29, 1844 in Belgrade. His father, Sándor I Karađorđević, was a Serbian prince, while his mother, Persida Nenadović, came from a noble family. Peter faced many hardships during his childhood when his father abdicated and the Obrenović family returned to power. In 1883, he entered into a dynastic marriage with Montenegrin princess Zorka Petrović-Njegoš, daughter of Prince Miklós I of Montenegro. In 1903, after the Karađorđević family returned to power, Peter occupied the throne as king. He was crowned in Belgrade in 1904. In 1918, the last year of the First World War, King Peter established the Kingdom of Serbia-Croatia-Slovenia, which later became known as Yugoslavia. Péter died on August 16, 1921 in Belgrade.

King Peter I of Serbia-Croatia-Slovenia reigned between 1903 and 1921. Its currency was the Serbian dinar, which was introduced in 1878. The dinar was based on gold and was worth 100 peasants. Under Peter I, different coins were minted, such as 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 peasants and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 100 dinars. The coins were made of copper, nickel, silver or gold. The coins usually featured the portrait of Peter I, the coat of arms, the name and the year of the reign.
