III. Alexios, also known as Alexios III Angelos, was the emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 1195 to 1203. He was the son of Andronikos I Angelos and ascended the throne in 1195 after his father was assassinated. During the reign of Alexios, the Byzantine Empire continued to deteriorate, and in later years the Crusades and the entry of the Latins in 1204 contributed to the loss of its power. During the reign of Alexios, the financial and political situation of the empire deteriorated significantly. The increase in taxes and the spread of corruption further aggravated the situation. He was married three times and among his children was a daughter, Irene Angelina, who later became II. She became the wife of Andronikos. Alexios fled the city in 1203, when the leaders of the crusade entered Constantinople. In the last years of his reign, the emperor and his family lived in exile, Alexiosz died in 1211.
