Joan Martí i Alanis (November 29, 1928 - October 11, 2009) was a Catalan archbishop, bishop of Urgell and co-prince of Andorra. Joan Martí i Alanis was born in Mila in 1928. He completed his ecclesiastical studies at the Tarragona Seminary (1939–1951). He was ordained a priest on June 17, 1951. He earned a degree in classical humanities in Salamanca (1951–1954). Later he learned French and English. On November 25, 1970, the Pope, VI. Pál appointed him bishop of Urgell. Bishop of Urgell and co-principal of Andorra: from 1971 to 2003, Joan Martí i Alanis was bishop of Urgell. In 1993, he signed Andorra's new constitution together with French President François Mitterrand. He was also co-principal of Andorra from 1971 to 2003, deriving from his episcopal office. Joan Martí i Alanis lived a long and distinguished life and played an important role in Andorran and Catalan ecclesiastical and political life. His brother, Antoni Martí Alanis, was a literary critic. We remember him with sincere respect.

Joan Martí i Alanis (1928-2009) was the Bishop of Urgell and Co-Duke of Andorra from 1971 to 2003. He was one of the signatories of Andorra's new constitution in 1993, which was drawn up together with the President of France, François Mitterrand. Andorra's coinage bore the names and coats of arms of the co-princes, as well as the co-principality's symbol, the two vertical stripes. Several coins were issued during the reign of Joan Martí i Alanis, for example in 1977, 1982, 1997 and 2002. Coinage was usually tied to the Spanish peseta or the euro.
