Pope Francis was born: Jorge Mario Bergoglio; (December 17, 1936) head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State. He is the first pope to be a member of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuit order), the first from America, the southern hemisphere, and the first pope to be born or raised outside of Europe. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bergoglio worked for a time as a bouncer and janitor. , at a young age, trained as a chemist and worked as a technician in a food science laboratory. After recovering from severe pneumonia and cysts, he was inspired to join the Jesuits in 1958. Ordained a Catholic priest in 1969, he was a Jesuit provincial superior in Argentina from 1973 to 1979. In 1998, he became Archbishop of Buenos Aires, II. Pope János Pál appointed him a cardinal in 2001. He led the Argentine church in 2001. during the Argentine riots in December. The papal conclave following the resignation of Pope Benedict on February 28, 2013 chose Bergoglio as his successor. He chose Francis as his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Ferenc is a critic of unrestrained capitalism, consumerism and overdevelopment. He made the action related to climate change the leading focus of his papacy, he classified the death penalty as bad in itself, called it an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person, and obliged the church to abolish it, saying that there is "no way back" from this situation. In international diplomacy, Ferenc criticized the rise of right-wing populism. He championed the cause of refugees during the migrant crisis in Europe and Central America, calling on the Western world to significantly increase immigration levels. In 2022, he apologized to the church for its role in the "cultural genocide" of Canada's indigenous peoples. On October 4, 2023, Francis convened the beginning of the synod, the culmination of his papacy and the most important event of the Catholic Church. The II.
