Description
Selim III was born in 1761 as the son of Mustafa III. Szelim came to the throne after the death of his uncle, Abdul-Hamid I, in 1789. He was an energetic ruler, so much was expected of him. He was convinced that the Empire needed reforms. At the time of his ascension to the throne, the Russo-Turkish war started and led by his predecessor was still in full swing. In 1792 the peace of Yasvásár was concluded with the Russian Tsarina Katalin II, as a result of which the region between Ochakov and the Dnieper came into Russian hands. In addition to financial matters, he also paid a lot of attention to teaching. In 1806, another Russo-Turkish war broke out. In 1807, the Sultan was deprived of his throne, replaced by his son Abdul-hamid I, Mustafa IV was planted. Selim went from the throne to prison, where he was strangled in 1808.

III. Sultan Selim ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1789 to 1807. At the beginning of his reign, the activities of the mint increased significantly, as significant financial resources had to be provided for the Sultan's modernization efforts. The Sultan ordered the issuance of new coins, which followed European models. These new coins were larger than the previous ones and featured the sultan's coat of arms and name. Sultan Selim centralized the minting and established a mint directorate. This institution supervised the activities of the mint and ensured the quality and uniformity of the money. III. Selim's coinage contributed to strengthening the financial system of the Ottoman Empire. The new coins facilitated trade and the development of economic relations. The sultan's coinage consisted of the following coins, gold: 30, 20, 10, 5 and 1 sultan, silver: 200, 100, 50, 25, 12, 5 and 1 para, copper: 100, 50, 25 and 1 para. Sultan gold coins were the most valuable coins of the empire. The portrait and name of the sultan were depicted, as well as the inscription "Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror".
