The Sultan of Oman, Qaboos was born in 1940 as Said III only son. He was a member of the Ál Said dynasty, ruling since 1744, and the Sultan of Oman from 1970 until his death in 2020. He seized the throne from his father in a quiet coup, and immediately after coming to power he started his enlightened reform policy. Among other things, he abolished the British protectorate and united his country, which he named Oman. He moved his headquarters to Muscat. During his reign, he eliminated the country's foreign policy isolation. He was treated for colon cancer from 2015. Until 2020, his condition gradually worsened, and he finally died at home. He was followed on the throne by his cousin Hajszam.

However, the Sultan soon recognized the importance of coinage in terms of national identity and economic development. They followed modern, European models. The Sultan considered it important that Oman's coinage reflect the country's modernity and development. The person and reign of Sultan Qaboosz was the main topic. The portrait of the Sultan and his most important deeds were often featured on coins and banknotes. During the reign of Sultan Qaboos, Oman's coinage was significantly expanded and several denominations and materials were put into circulation. In 1970, when he ascended the throne, the portrait of the Sultan appeared on the 100 rial and 500 rial banknotes .In 1975, Oman began minting its own coins. The first coins were made in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 20 bajzas and had the face of Sultan Kábúsz on them. In 1980, coins with a denomination of 25 bajzas appeared. In 1990, the new rial was introduced, which is worth 1,000 bajzas. The new rial denomination banknotes and coins feature the face of Sultan Qaboosz and the sultan's coat of arms. In 2000, Oman began minting 1 rial coins. In 2010, they began minting 50 bajza coins.
