II. Emperor Philippus was ruler of the Roman Empire from 247 to 249, succeeding his father Philippus Arabs. Together with his father, he celebrated the thousandth anniversary of the founding of Rome and minted many coins for this occasion. II. On the coins of Philippus he was usually depicted with a bare-headed and draped bust and was inscribed PRINCIPI IVVENT (prince of youth). The obverse often bore the mark SC (senatus consulto), indicating that the coins were minted with the approval of the senate. II. Coins of Philippus were also struck in the city of Nisibis in Mesopotamia, where a statue of the local goddess Tyche was depicted in a rectangular sanctuary.
