Description

Abdul-Aziz (9 February 1830 – 4 June 1876) was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1861 to 1876. Abdul-Aziz was born on February 9, 1830 II. As the son of Mahmud (and the brother of Abdul-Mejid I). He ascended the throne in 1861 after his brother's death. Despite the old custom, he did not kill his predecessor's sons, and he also broke with Ottoman tradition by appointing his much younger son, Izzeddin, as his successor. Conflicts arose between the Old Turks and the New Turks in his council and palace. His government came under British and Russian influence, and the state sank into debt. The Cretan rebellion of 1868 and the Bosnian rebellion of 1875 showed the empire's weakness. Finally, in 1876, he was forced to resign, and his nephew Murad was named his successor. A few days later, on June 4th, Abdul-Aziz allegedly ended his life by cutting his veins. At the time of his death, Abdul-Aziz was 46 years old.
