In 1872, he began to suffer from mental disorders, and in 1875 was declared unfit to rule in Since his illness made it impossible for him to rule responsibly, his uncle Luitpold was appointed regent for him. Luitpold ruled in his stead until his death in 1912. In 1912, the government was taken over by Luitpold's son, Lajos.

Minting information

King Otto, who was King of Bavaria from 1886 to 1913, was unable to mint coins as he was declared unfit to rule due to mental illness. He was replaced by two regents, Luitpold and Lajos, who minted their own money. King Otto's name and portrait are not on these coins, only those of the regents. The Bavarian coinage operated as part of the German Empire during this period, and the German mark and pfennig were the official currency. The coinage was characterized by the fact that the coat of arms of the House of Wittelsbach, the double-headed eagle and the Bavarian lion can be seen on the back of the coins. The Bavarian coinage was not significant in this period, and most of the coins were made with the names and portraits of the regents. Therefore, King Otto's coinage did not exist, only that of the regents.
