II. József, a Habsburg-család tagja, 1765-től 1790-ig uralkodott, és sokrétű reformjai révén vált ismertté. Az általa kibocsátott érmék fontos szerepet játszottak az osztrák pénzügyi rendszerben, különösen az adott kor gazdasági és kereskedelmi életében. Az ez idő alatt kibocsátott érmék között található az .873 tisztaságú ezüstből készült 1/4 Koronatallér is, amely jól tükrözi a korszak pénzügyi viszonyait és a gazdasági reformokat.

Az érmék kibocsátását jelentősen befolyásolták az uralkodói reformok, amelyeket II. József vitt véghez. Ezek között szerepeltek a pénzügyi reformok, melyek célja a birodalom gazdasági stabilitásának biztosítása és a kereskedelem élénkítése volt.
